Your electric bill might be the one thing you dread almost every single month. Will it be pricey? Or did you do a good job this past month of being mindful of the amount of energy and electricity you are using?
How to Save on Your Electric Bill?
Keeping the lights on, sitting in cool air, and taking a hot shower isn’t cheap. In fact, the typical family spends “an average of $2,200 per year on utilities,” according to the Energy Department. While this is a good amount of money to spend, there are ways to lower your energy bill each month. By lowering it even by 25% can make a big difference when it comes to the amount of cash you could be used for other things.
So today, we’ll be sharing a few ways on how to save on your electric bill.
The AC
First things first, let’s talk about your AC. This is one of the biggest culprits behind an expensive utility bill, which also means the first place you should go to when trying to cut down costs.
Here are a few things you can do when it comes to cutting costs when trying to cool or heat your home.
- Check Your Windows - It’s very common for windows to not be shut all the way or for the seals to be worn out. A bad seal allows energy to seep out, which means dollar signs going out the door as well.
- Turn your AC up when you leave your house. If you’re gone for 10 hours a day at work, turn your AC up. Or, if you’re comfortable working in your home with the AC set a bit higher do that too! This can lower your annual heating and cooling costs by around 10%.
- Invest in curtains or blinds (if you don’t already have them). While natural light is great, during the super hot months you may need to close your blinds or curtains just a little. If not, the blazing sun will be shining into your home all day long, making it a bit hotter than normal.
Water
“Hot water is the second-largest expense in powering most homes, according to the Energy Department.” So what are ways you can cut back hot water in your home?
- Take a shorter shower - While it’s nice to soak up all the hot water in the shower after a long day at work, it’s also costing you a pretty penny as well.
- Fix leaky faucets - That drip, drip, drip sound shouldn’t just be annoying to you. It’s actually costing you a big chunk of money as well.
- Laundry - We recommend washing your clothes in cooler water if you can. If not, try adding more clothes to a load so fewer loads have to happen. This can cut your pre-load energy usage in half.
Power and Light
Keeping the lights and electronics on accounts for roughly 12% of a home’s energy usage.
- Switch your light bulbs to LED or energy-efficient light bulbs. You can save $75 per year by swapping out light bulbs in your most used light fixtures.
- Install dimmer switches in the rooms you use the most. You don’t always have to have your lights so bright!
- Try to use natural light if you can.
- Unplug your electronics when you aren’t using them. A few common ones to unplug - coffee maker, toaster, or your computer!
All of these tips are helpful, but our most important advice would be
to go solar! That will help to reduce the bill considerably and has
many other benefits you should consider.
We hope these tips help you save on your next electric bill!
